Last year, in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Peace Corps, the RPCV's of Colorado adopted an Urban Garden in Civic Center Park. We partnered with Grow Local, an organization dedicated to promoting local food, local community and local economy. We also worked directly with Denver Parks and Recreation, who donated the two flower beds to be used for produce. In 2011 we donated 411 lbs of produce to The Gathering Place, a day time drop-in center for women and children in Denver, who are experiencing homelessness and poverty.  Not only did the produce we harvest help this great community resource, but we showed our community our commitment by volunteering more than 200 hours of service.

This year, we were asked by Grow Local and Denver Parks and Recreation to maintain the garden in Civic Center Park again! During this 2012 season, we grew 343 lbs of tomatoes, cabbage, lemon cucumbers, lettuce, broccoli, eggplant, Swiss chard, Thai basil, and kale.  Thanks so much to the dedicated group of RPCV’s who gave up summer afternoons, and evenings, to pull weeds, and harvest.  Again this year, they gave over 200 hours of their time, and truly personified the third goal of Peace Corps.

The board of RPCV’s of Colorado would like to thank the dedicated volunteers this season, and recruit anyone who is interested in volunteering next year! So, if you were able to help the entire summer, or just one night, we would like to celebrate you.  Also, if you were unable to volunteer this season and are interested in learning more about how you can volunteer in 2013 then please join us for a party.
